PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

Equipping young people with life skills since ‘98

Attitude’s mission is to support schools, communities and whānau to build Aotearoa’s most resilient generation yet. We desire that every young person would leave an Attitude presentation feeling inspired and practically equipped to make healthy decisions both now and in the future.

For Students

Development of skills to build a meaningful, resilient life

Research carried out by independent analyst company, Point Research, found that 94% of students rated Attitude presentations as either ‘worthwhile’ or ‘really worthwhile.’ Furthermore, 78% of participants said it would affect the choices they made in the future.

The Attitude programme is based on, and influenced by the concepts of Te whare tapa whā and social and emotional learning. Our programmes aim to build young people’s resilience by improving the following protective factors:

  • Tautoko the life-affirming messages in the New Zealand Health Curriculum

  • Strengthen key relationships including parents, peers and other significant adults

  • Encourage young people to value themselves and others

  • Inspire hope within young people for the present and the future

  • Provide access to quality information about health-related issues

  • To improve students’ connectedness to school

  • To empower young people to ask for help and point them in the direction of other youth organisations who can provide one on one assistance.

For Whānau

Increased connection with their child

Research shows that many teenagers still care about their parent’s opinions. Many adults don’t believe this, and even fewer teenagers would publicly admit this. The truth is that the better a young person’s relationship is with the key adults in their life, the better their wellbeing outcomes are in the long-term.

Our desire for young people is that they would remain closely connected to their whānau right through until adulthood. We express the importance of these connections both implicitly and explicitly in all our presentations.

This leaves students with improved insight into the actions of their parents and/or caregivers, along with suggestions for improving those key relationships.

For Teachers

Reinforcement of health curriculum and positive behaviour

Attitude presentations are designed to not only compliment the Health Curriculum but also to encourage positive behaviour and decision-making within the whole student body. This is why our preference is to present to every year level at each school at least once per year.
